Breathing New Life into Commerce: A Historic Home’s Renaissance

In the heart of downtown Commerce, Georgia, stands a testament to the power of vision and craftsmanship. An investor with an eye for potential purchased this historic home, granting our restoration team carte blanche to revive its faded glory. What follows is a visual journey through the painstaking process of honoring the past while creating a space for the future.

Our first steps involved carefully peeling back decades of history. The walls, a palimpsest of changing tastes, revealed multiple layers including original tongue and groove and charming headboard. Each layer uncovered told a story of the home’s evolution through the years.

A unique three-sided twisted fireplace once formed the heart of this home. While safety concerns necessitated its removal, we were determined not to let its story end there. The bricks, rich with history, found new purpose in creating walkways to the home’s exterior doors-a literal path connecting past to present.

In the kitchen, we let the floor tell the tale of the absent fireplace. During restoration, we deliberately laid the floorboards to outline where the fireplace once stood-a subtle nod to the home’s original layout that observant visitors will appreciate.

The beadboard removed from the walls wasn’t destined for the scrap heap. After careful cleaning, select pieces found new life as accent walls, infusing rooms with character. Other sections were repurposed into charming chair rails, marrying functionality with historic charm.

Outside, we discovered the metal roof was a hidden gem in great condition. A thorough cleaning and fresh coat of paint breathed new life into this protective crown. The home’s siding received similar treatment-cleaned, repaired where necessary, and painted to protect it for years to come.

Throughout this journey, our guiding principle was to clean and reuse every salvageable piece. This approach not only honors the craftsmanship of those who built the home but also minimizes waste, making this restoration as environmentally conscious as it is historically respectful.

The result is a home that stands proud in downtown Commerce-a bridge between centuries that proves with vision and care, the old can be made new again without losing its soul.
